Anitquteas – High Tea and Dessert Bar, Hahndorf

Let’s say the word together, Anti-qu-teas!! So, what is it? Antiquteas is a new addition to the old traditional Hahndorf and it specialises in high tea and deserts. I went past this place several times when they were doing their decorations and refurbishment. My wife was the one who really wanted to try this place out :>. However, due to limited open days, I was not able to book for seats for 3 months but finally we went there on the 23rd Dec LAST YEAR:P!!! Can’t believe it’s 2012 now! LOL

Located towards the end of Main Street, Hahndorf next to IGA, the Antiquteas is of a luxurious decoration and table settings. It made me feeling I am in the old Victoria time where everything is just beautifully set out. From old fashioned lights to the black theme of the whole cafe, the elegance and luxuries are just everywhere!

A good high tea is not of top standard if it doesn’t have nice serve wares. The Royal Albert tea sets and the golden cutlery fit into the whole theme well, which showed how detailing the owner is.

Anyway, I am here for high tea, not for tea sets, right?! So, let’s begin the high tea! The champagne – mind me for the word, it is actually sparking blanc – included in the high tea was from the Lane Vineyards from Adelaide Hills, showing case a good cool climate variety, which the Hill is renowned for. The wine itself was very crisp and was a good appetising compliment to the main plates.

As with any high tea, a savoury plate and a sweet platter were included. The savoury plate contained 3 kinds of sandwiches, including egg mustard, smoked salmon and hand ‘n’ cheese, and a turkey tart. Among the 4 of them, I liked the turkey tart the most. Biting while it’s hot, I can taste the softness and aromas from the turkey and still touch its tenderness in my  mouth. The smoked salmon sandwich was not bad – contained good salmon. The other two sandwiches were just okay. BUT the whole idea of high tea is for girls to eat and mingle with each other, isn’t it?

For the sweet platter, you get some macarons, Christmas cake and cherry cups as well as scones. As a symbol for high tea, scones should represent its quality and I should indeed say the scones from Antiquteas were good. They were soft and tangy and went very well with either cream and jam. Although they are not the best I’ve had before, they are still of good quality. For the rest of the platter, the cheery cup used fresh cherry with some cream in the chocolate cup, making it refreshing and sweet especially after several sips. The Christmas cakes were fun and sweet as well as the macarons.

Sweet stuffs should always be accompanied by a tea or coffee. Antiquteas serve English breakfast or Earl Grey as their tea. I don’t like the spicy taste of earl grey, so we decided to go with English Brekkie. Good tea though! Loose tea leaves were infused in this beautiful silver tea pot and the rest were all silver wares, making the experience elegant and luxurious overall. Ps: The pot was really really really heavy 😛

The overall experience was fine for Antiqutea High tea. The sweet platter was moreish and sweet while the savoury plate was yum. Although most of them are not the best I had before, they are good “time wasters” (:P) for girl’s meeting-ups.

Food: 3/5
Service: 4/5
Value: 3/5 – I really think $44 per person is too high for a high tea. If you bought a deal voucher, that’s another story then.
Ambience: 4/5

Total: 14/20

  3. Howdy! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting fed up of WordPress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at options for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

  4. I also have been to this location. Whilst it was very good, we had actually made advantage of a online coupon voucher. I would never visit on full price as $44 is very steep. Would have been nice to have a wider range of teas available. But I did enjoy the no rush feel about it. (Mind you, if this place were to truly blossom, I’m sure sessions would be more strict).

We had a different menu to yours and we left full and very energetic (but I think it was more so from the copious amounts of tea with sugar we drank)

    1. Hi, Alana

I agree with you. They should have more tea options. English Breakfast and Earl Grey are just too common. Thanks for dropping by anyway and glad you enjoyed.

PS: I was very full after the session as well and didn’t have dinner until later at night. Too much tea and sugar!!LOL

    2. As of yesterday, four new hand-blended teas were added to the menu at Antiquteas. (I know as I am the blender)
We also taste tested some future options amongst the diners and the passers-by.

  5. Had a high tea there today. The lady was very rude. I was told children were allowed, however, when we got there was made to feel very different indeed. Had asked for a high chair, there wasn’t one. Had to sit in the corner do we were not in the way, and was told it was booked! Well, the whole time we were there, it was not busy at all. Was very rudely told for my daughter not to touch the $80 tea cup, she could have used a little more tact. My mother and I were very disappointed, do not recommend at all. Not a nice way to greet your guests.

    1. Hi, Bianca. Very sad to hear your story. Did you complain with the service person? I feel very sorry for your experience. Any services, I suppose, should care about their customers more than anything else. Well, thanks for your comments. At least, my readers can learn from it now.

      Regards
